Question: I've cleaned and part-boarded out my loft for storage. why does it smell so unpleasant up there?

Theres plenty of ventilation so why doesn't the air smell clear. it is an old house (100 years). Loft was very dusty and theres old dirty insulation material between the ceiling joists. Could this be harbouring the odour? whats the solution?

Hi, I suppose one answer would be to replace the insulation as I'm sure it has been there many years. If this is not feasible at the moment, then how about putting some large bowls of lavender up in the loft for a while. You even may have to replace them a couple of times as the absorb smells etc. Also there are lots of commercial air fresheners on the market that actually smell ok. They used to smell so artificial.
